In Hawaiʻi, a pāʻina is more than a party. It’s a gathering, a feast. A celebration of being together. Rooted in hospitality and community, it captures the spirit of welcoming people to be part of a shared experience. It was this word that shaped the Engage!26 Maui welcome party, and by the end of the night, everyone in attendance understood exactly what it meant. There could hardly have been a more fitting way to begin our first summit of the year. Dressed in vintage Hawaiiana, guests spent the evening exploring the best of Maui’s culinary scene, discovering thoughtful island-inspired details, and reconnecting with friends old and new as the sun slipped below the horizon and the magic of Maui after dark began.
Setting the Scene: An Island Gathering
The Beach House Lawn at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua sits above D.T. Fleming Beach, framed by majestic palms and open to the Pacific on three sides. At golden hour, with the ocean turning copper and the trade winds moving through the fronds overhead, it is the kind of setting that requires very little embellishment. Instead, the creative team embraced the landscape with a contemporary interpretation of island style that drew on natural materials, warm textures, and earthy neutrals punctuated by saturated tropical color.
Guests entered through a bamboo tunnel, an A-frame structure softened with fairy lights and woven pendant lanterns. Beyond, an open layout with festoon lighting, rattan pendants, basket lanterns, and hanging wicker shades. Florals were intentionally loose, celebrating the island’s natural abundance with a lush mix of bird of paradise, ginger, orchids, and roses alongside produce and native materials like bananas, banana blossoms, jackfruit, oranges, coconuts, ferns, and palms. Each arrangement felt foraged from the island.
On arrival, each guest was gifted a fresh flower to wear. An old Hawaiian tradition states that worn over the right ear, it signals you’re single; over the left, that you’re taken. It was a thoughtful cultural detail that immediately sparked conversation, smiles, and plenty of good-natured laughter as guests compared placements. Throughout the evening, other interactive moments encouraged guests to engage, from a striking wall of ukuleles, wooden longboards, and a coconut station lined with branded Engage! coconuts, to a vintage VW bus photo booth.
A Taste of Maui
One of the defining features of the evening was its celebration of Maui’s remarkable fine dining talent. Eight local chefs and restaurants came together to create a menu that showcased the diversity, innovation, and exceptional produce found across the island.
Guests wandered freely between stations, discovering dishes that reflected both Hawaiian ingredients and global influences. For example, seafood paella sat alongside beautifully prepared Hāpuʻu, Hawaiian sea bass prized for its delicate flavor, while Hamachi Misoyaki brought Japanese inspiration to the menu. Crispy duck breast and Wagyu flat iron added richness, balanced by lighter offerings like Hawaiian Ahi Tuna Tartare. But perhaps the most memorable food moment came from the playful Spin Art Ahi station. Here, ahi tuna was served on a crisp lavash “record,” prepared on a working record player with island-inspired sauces and garnishes. It perfectly embodied the culinary creativity that defined the evening.
The drinks menu embraced classic island favorites. Guests sipped Blue Hawaiis, Mai Tais, and Piña Coladas (virgin or otherwise) served inside custom Engage! coconuts. Fresh coconuts were also expertly opened to order, offering one of Hawaii’s simplest pleasures exactly as nature intended.
Pacific Playlist: Entertainment Highlights
As the evening unfolded, music became the thread that tied every moment together. Gentle melodies drifted across the lawn, blending with the sound of waves rolling onto the beach below. First, an acoustic set by Ashley Toth provided the perfect soundtrack to golden hour. Then, the unmistakable sound of the ukulele, performed by Derick Sebastian, anchored the evening firmly in the sound of Hawaiʻi.
Any local will tell you that barefoot dancing is the true Hawaiian way. So later, as the moon rose and the DJ took over, shoes quickly became optional on the dance floor. Dancing in the grass under a canopy of string lights with the ocean in the background was a moment we won’t soon forget.
Dress Code & Attire
The dress code for the Engage!26 welcome party was ‘vintage Hawaiiana’. It struck the perfect balance between nostalgia and modern resort style. Guests embraced the effortless glamour of mid-century island living through flowing dresses, relaxed tailoring, printed shirts, natural fibers, and cheerful tropical accessories. Floral prints mingled with crisp linens, raffia bags, and colorful jewelry, creating a wonderfully eclectic mix of personal interpretations. It was a crowd that dressed for a pāʻina, and looked stylishly at home on a Hawaiian beach lawn at golden hour.
The Engage!26 Maui welcome party was memorable not because it tried to outshine its surroundings, but because it allowed the island to speak for itself. Inspired by the Hawaiian spirit of pāʻina, the evening celebrated the simple joy of bringing people together through exceptional food, thoughtful design, meaningful traditions, and genuine connection. For the days ahead, there could hardly have been a more fitting aloha.
